“The other day, as I was preparing for work, I felt a sharp pain in my elbow. My very first thought was, ‘Hey! I am about my Father’s business and you [mortal mind] can’t be here.’ So, I focused completely on my holy calling as a Christian Science nurse and performed my office as porter, shutting out any unhealthy thoughts and fears (see Science and Health 392:27). A few hours into my shift, I realized the pain was gone, and it never entered my consciousness again.”
The following poem inspired our staff members, and we wanted to share it with you! It’s a perfect reminder of the love our Christian Science nurses express when they assist someone.
“Love beyond compare” by Lucy Chambers Karwell
From the October 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal
Sweeter than choice nectar
that draws the searching bee;
Surer than returning spring
with birdsong’s harmony;
Brighter than sun’s blazing orb
at its most potent hour;
Gentler than distilling dew
refreshing leaf and flower;
Stronger than prevailing wind
that stirs the yielding sea—
Is God’s ever-present love
enfolding you and me.
