Education Overview

A Christian Science Nurse is a representative of the Manual of The Mother Church. At Broadview, the Christian Science nurse training program prepares you to uphold the standards of Christian Science by relying on God, while giving compassionate care to those in need.

For an individual who desires to maintain an atmosphere that is completely dedicated to their practice of metaphysics in their life, being in an environment where the care givers are receptive to the same things has a beneficial and calming effect, which aids in healing. In a Christian Science nursing facility, there is absolute trust that your faith is respected and understood.

Why would someone want to become a Christian Science nurse?

It is important that we support each other in our greatest needs. Mary Baker Eddy recognized that her students would face challenges and impelled every member of the Church to be healers. Christian Science nursing is just a means to fulfill that directive.

What qualities are needed to be a Christian Science nurse?

Jesus had instructed his students to be wise and watchful as well as compassionate. Christian Science nurses ought to maintain that same loving compassion, especially when attending to others.

“Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” (p. 395), “The nurse should be cheerful, orderly, punctual, patient, full of faith,—receptive to Truth and Love” Article VIII, Section 31, of the Manual amplifies these requirements of character by the following statement: “A member of The Mother Church who represents himself or herself as a Christian Science nurse shall be one who has a demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science practice, who thoroughly understands the practical wisdom necessary in a sick room, and who can take proper care of the sick.”

What does a Christian Science nurse bring to the atmosphere?

When we expect goodness and health, we are rewarded. Even on our busiest day, we are striving to express God. We are a supportive community, always helping each other. Selflessness, tenderness, empathy, charity, camaraderie, and energetic enthusiasm are all the qualities that are expressed daily at Broadview.

What are some of the practical skills that are learned in the Christian Science nurses training program at Broadview?

In Christian Science nursing class, we learn personal care, bathing, helping a patient get dressed, etc. We also teach how to aid someone with their mobility, in various circumstances and settings. We learn cleansing and covering, camp nursing, visiting nursing and leadership skills. All these are taught with a basis in Christian Science.

How do these practical skills become proficient?

Dedicated Christian Science nurse mentors are always available to ensure the right practice of skills. Students are lovingly shepherded and guided to the right course of action and can progress at their own pace.

How do you become a Journal-listed Christian Science nurse?

After successful completion of Christian Science Nurses training levels 1-4, a student may apply to have their name listed in the Journal. The requirements for application are on the Mother Church website. You may ask Fornis Siamesa, the manager of Christian Science nursing education for more information regarding this.
